Indy Speedrome Hornets

The Indianapolis Speedrome version of the "Hornets" is a new, entry level racing division designed to allow novice racers an opportunity for heads-up competition on a small budget. One unique twist to the division is that there is no qualifying for the Hornets on race night. Starting order for each event is determined by a draw and the race may be conducted from a standing start.

Section 1: Body

1. Must be a subcompact, 4-cylinder model. (No Firebird, Camaro, Fairmont, etc.) Station Wagons and Pickups allowed. No convertibles or 4-wheel drives allowed.
2. No rear engine or mid-engine models.
3. All cars must be stock, street legal, and no modifications of any kind.
4. Body must be sheet metal and fully stock appearing, no aluminum or fiber glass. No alterations of any kind. Roof, windshield post, and cowl must remain stock. Pickups must enclose bed. It is ok to remove rear window frame on Hatchback cars. If removed, replace deck portion with sheet metal to retain stock appearance. May not lower or tilt roofline.
5. Except windshield, remove all glass, moldings, and lens. All cars must have full windshield. No rear windows.
6. Full floorboard must remain intact. Must have firewall between driver and engine, and between driver and fuel tank. Except for firewall, no interior sheet metal.
7. No holes in hood for air cleaner. Hoods and trunks must have hood type pins. No bolting down.
8. Stock-type A-arms, struts, and ball joints only. Cars must have original track width as manufactured.

Section 2: Engines

1. Engine must be 4 cylinders, and stock for year, make and model. Engines must remain in stock location.
2. Single carburetor or factory fuel injected only not to exceed 2 barrels.
3. Intake and exhaust manifold must be of stock manufacturers original. No headers of any kind, even if stock.
4. No turbo, or rotary engines.
5. Exhaust must be single and completely sealed. It must exit behind driver and the last 6" of exhaust pipe not to exceed 2"inner diameter. Exhaust must be visible. No Flex-pipe allowed.
6. Ignition systems must remain stock. No aftermarket ignitions. Aftermarket wires and cap allowed.
7. All cars MUST make use of factory air cleaner.

Section 3: Fuel System

1. Fuel cell strongly recommended, fuel tank must be safely secured with 4 steel straps. If moving fuel cell/tank into hatchback trunk or pickup bed, you must build a firewall to fully contain unit. No plastic tanks of any kind. If fuel cell is used, it must be completely enclosed in steel can.
2. Steel lines or braided hose must be used as fuel line form fuel source to fuel pump. No fuel lines in cockpit area.
3. All cars MUST retain factory fuel pump whether mechanical or electrical. ABSOLUTELY NO AFTERMARKET ELECTRICAL PUMPS ALLOWED. No pumps outside the factory fuel tank etc.
4. No tampering with "factory" impact cut-off fuel switch. All factory safety wiring and switches intact as delivered and manufactured.

Section 4: Tires and Wheels & Miscellaneous

1. Any 70, 75, or 80 series DOT radial tire 195 or smaller. No racing tires.
2. Maximum 6" wide steel wheels. Safety wheels are recommended on right side (may not exceed width rule).
3. No weight may be added to car.
4. Cars must have 4 wheel brakes and must be factory stock system.
5. Front or rear -wheel drive with 3, 4, or 5 speed or automatic transmissions. No quick change-type or trick automatic transmissions or rear- ends. No four-wheel or all wheel drives.

SAFETY

1. All cars must retain the "factory installed and manufactured" seat belt with factory configuration.
2. All cars must have either factory ignition switch or a "on / off" switch. NO ALTERED STEERING COLUMNS THAT MAKE USE OF SCREW DRIVER ACTUATED SWITCH.
3. No battery locations other than factory location (i.e. no batteries inside car or trunk area)
4. No antifreeze in radiator, water only.
5. No broken glass inside vehicle and or it's doors.
6. Snell approved helmet rated 90 or newer is REQUIRED. Helmet must be accompanied by acceptable neck collar and used anytime during racing and practicing events.
7. A fire retardant suit is recommended, but a long sleeve shirt will be acceptable for any driver.
8. All flammable material MUST be removed except, front seat and dash- board.
9. All exterior side mirrors MUST be removed.
10. Hood and trunk latches MUST be removed and replaced with hood pins.
11. All cars MUST remain stock with the exception of safety and other rules as set forth.
12. Doors MUST be welded, chained or bolted shut.
13. Driver's door must have either a steel plate installed inside door shell or an exterior mounted reinforcement bar attached. This bar or plate must incorporate the A and B pillar post area for extra driver protection.
14. Any sunroofs must be entirely covered with steel.

NUMBERING

1. All cars must have racecar numbering at least 24 inches tall. Numbers must be on both doors and right upper windshield area. Windshield number must be white and at least 6 inches tall.
2. No numbers will be assigned from 1 through 10. Number assignment will begin at 11 through 99.

INDIANAPOLIS SPEEDROME OFFICIAL'S DECISIONS ON HORNET CAR QUALIFICATIONS ARE FINAL AND NOT SUBJECT TO APPEAL OF ANY KIND.

ANY CAR THAT DISPLAYS A "OVERLY COMPETITIVE" ON TRACK PERFORMANCE CAN AND WILL BE DISALLOWED FROM FUTURE PARTICIPATION.

POINTS equals dollars earned

1. Point Champion MUST move to a different Division the following Season.
2. All drivers finishing in the top 5 in points MUST move to a different Division after 2 years (not consecutive).
