Mike St. John had to thank “Lady Luck” and his staunchest rival for making it possible for him to win his second World Figure 8 Championship in the 14th Annual classic on September 8, 9, 2003 at the Indianapolis Speedrome.

St. John was lucky that the race was stopped by rain during its 43rd minute Saturday night while he was still on lap 106 with 5 other leaders. It was on that lap that he felt his drive train begin to seize up.

A few minutes later in a rainy pit area, the problem was narrowed down to a damaged differential that was beyond repair, but St. John got lucky again. And this time good fortune came from the unlikeliest of places- from long-time rival and 3 Time World Figure 8 Champion Wayne Arnold. Arnold, who had crashed early Saturday, chose to retire his car and gave St. John his rear axle assembly to install that night and use the next day.

Mike St. John drove a flawless race under the Sunday afternoon sunshine to complete 339 laps and win the race on Wayne Arnold’s axle. St. John was never in serious trouble and pitted only once for fuel under the yellow flag without losing the lead on lap 262.

In a repeat of his 1987 victory, Michigan’s Bob Studt followed St. John to the checkered flag. Studt drove a steady relatively trouble-free race to finish 9 seconds in front of 1988 World Champion Leonard Basham. 1986 winner, Rance Harmon of Jeffersonville was 4th. Speedrome drivers could claim only 4 of the top 10 places.

Fast qualifier and future Mega Superstar Jack Dossey Jr. came within .006 of breaking the qualifications record. Dossey started Sunday afternoon in 1st place, but a series of crashes sent him to the sidelines after completing 244 laps. Basham ran the fastest during the race, but was slowed by 2 pit stops for repairs that cost him a total of ten laps.

The race was stopped because of rain after 43 minutes, 30 seconds. Jack Dossey Jr. was leading, Leonard Basham 2nd, George Sutton 3rd and Bruce Tunny 4th. The race was restarted Sunday and completed on Sunday September 9.

Leonard Basham 13 times for 68 laps
Duane Lee 14 times for 102 laps
