Jack Dossey Jr. took command in the last 45 minutes to win his first World Figure 8 Championship.

Dossey completed 354 laps against a record field of 86 cars to become the ninth different winner of the World Figure 8 Championship.

He repeatedly survived many four-car and eight-car duels, some in heavy contact, to finally take the lead for good on lap 252. His win touched off a huge celebration. He climbed atop his car and hoisted a sign proclaiming his $7,000 win. Who knew then that Jack would go on to be a Speedrome Legend and win five more times!!

Amazingly, the red-and-white number 1 was virtually unscathed after the three-hour run as Dossey said, “I really made only one mistake, but this was a hard win. There were a lot of times I was in the lead and would get caught up in traffic and drop to third or fourth. It took a long time to get here.”

Dossey’s previous best finish was third in 1987. Three-time World Figure 8 champion Mike St. John was second and defending champion Duane Lee was third.

Although leading early, Dossey struggled during the first two hours. He lost the lead on lap 227 when he was enveloped into a two-car crash at the crossover before putting it in reverse gear to escape. In less than 15 minutes Dossey had the lead for good as another car and Rodney Sizemore struck Lee and Mike St. John pitted.

There were 29 lead changes among six drivers in the frantic non-stop World Figure 8 Championship. Dossey, the pole winner with a track record of 16.716 seconds, led 13 times for 204 laps. He locked up in a fierce mid-race duel in heavy contact with Bill Tunny Jr. who came all the way from 21st to first in only 49 laps and led for 74 laps.

Sizemore, the 1992 runner-up, was fourth and Richard Fenwick overcame early collisions to finish fifth, 17 laps down. Three-time runner Bob Studt was sixth to lead a dozen Michigan drivers with Dennis Whisman, Dave Lambert and David Bazzy among the top 20.

Competition for the Sonny Thompson Memorial award for best start-finish position improvement was close with Frank Norman winning the award by finishing 40th after starting 83rd, farther back than any other previous recipient. His net gain of 43 positions edged Bob Foster Sr.

Gary Bedell earned the Sonny Eaton Memorial award for top rookie by finishing seventh, completing 330 laps.
There were a record 92 entrants.
