Jack Dossey Jr. became the first repeat winner since 1991 of the World
Figure 8 Championship in a fast and awesome race held September 10, 1994 at
the Indianapolis Speedrome.
“The performance speaks for itself,” Dossey beamed moments after claiming
his second consecutive World Figure 8 Championship. “It was an awesome race…
it’s called an endurance race but it’s a three hour sprint race.”
Dossey, who won $8,000, was so right. He completed 403 laps, the first time
since 1986 that the 400-lap mark had been surpassed.
It left runner-up Duane Lee, plagued late in the race without brakes,
virtually gasping when he said, “I couldn’t believe the pace. The leaders
drove it like it was anything but an endurance race.”
Seventy-nine drivers competed in the 18th Annual World Figure 8 that was
spiced by the command to start the engines by then Mayor Steve Goldsmith.
Lee, the 1992 World Figure 8 Champion, completed 400 laps. Former
champion Leonard Basham led all the out of towners in third with 381 laps.
Dossey took the lead for good on lap 283, emerging from a three-car
shootout with a commanding one-lap lead with 30 minutes to go. Challenger
Mike St. John was involved in a crash just a few feet behind Dossey on lap
311. A few minutes earlier, Lee slowed to void a collision and went a lap
down.
The race was red-flagged on lap 253 for a fire in Michigan’s Jack Dandy’s
car. Dandy rolled from the car and was not injured.
He early pace was frantic. There were 20 lead changes in the first 185
laps among five drivers, including Dossey. He led a total of 282 laps with
Rodney Sizemore leading 67 laps, St. John 25, Lee 22 and Richard Fenwick
eight.
Louisville’s Roger Vincent was the top first-time driver, finishing 16th
to earn the Sonny Eaton Memorial award. Jack Smith earned the Sonny Thompson
Memorial award for best improvement, finishing 30th after starting 69th. Kim
Gibson finished 26th, best finish for a woman in the race.
Jack Dossey was your fast qualifier at 16.940.
