In the wildest and wackiest of the 19 yearly chases, the 19th Annual
World Figure 8 Championship went right to the top of the chart on September
11, 1995.
There were 19 lead changes, with the last one the wackiest, and 18
cautions, with one involving the winner as the wildest.
Duane Lee won it by completing 431 laps within three hours, one more than
runner-up and defending World Champ Jack Dossey Jr.
Lee took the lead for good with 14 minutes to go on lap 397 when leader
Jack Dossey Jr. ran into the backend of a slower car and had to pit to
replace a flat tire.
It was Lee’s first World Championship since 1992 and ended Dossey’s
string at two wins. Lee won $9,000. He becomes the fifth multiple winner of
the World Figure 8 Championship.
“It’s unbelievable,” Lee beamed. “ I thought I threw it away when I went
on top of that (Norton Jr.) car. I thought I was going to roll over. To win
this race after all that is unbelievable… and the pace was really fast.”
Just five minutes before he regained the lead, Lee was atop R.J. Norton
Jr. ‘s car. But under the same caution, Dossey was struck by another car and
forced into the pits.
Once Lee’s car restarted again, he held onto the lead after battling Bill
Tunny Jr. earlier and surviving the duel with Dossey.
Lee led five times for a total of 100 laps. Including the final 35. Tunny
led 240 laps. Dossey led for 48 laps.
Third place finisher Danny Turner completed 422 laps. Fifth place Scott
Martin, who entered the race on the 19th lap, earned the Sonny Thompson
Memorial Award for best start-to-finish improvement. Mike Haskett earned the
Sonny Eaton Memorial rookie of the race honors in 42nd place.
Seventy competitors raced in the 19th Annual World Figure 8 Championship.
Jack Dossey was your fast qualifier at 16.762.
Fenwick led the first two laps and his usual strategy of just playing it
safe once again landed Richard just a good finish and not a win. There were
eight lead changes among five drivers with Tunny leading at the 30-minute
mark with 87 laps completed.
Leader summary
Bill Tunny Jr. 6 times for 240 laps
Duane Lee 5 times for 100 laps
Jack Dossey 2 times for 48 laps
Eddie VanMeter 3 times for 27 laps
Fred Bear Jr. 1 time for 8 laps
Doug Greig 1 time for 6 laps
Rich Fenwick 1 time for 2 laps
