Jack Dossey Jr. survived crash after crash to win the 20th Anniversary of the World Figure 8.

Dossey completed 399 laps and won by three laps over runner-up and pole sitter Fred Bear Jr., who led eight times for 100 laps, and boldly tried to track the leader down in the waning minutes.

It was Dossey’s third win in four years. Unlike his wins in 1993 and 994, Dossey’s car was totally battered this time, mostly due to a three-car skirmish on lap 224. He led the final 90 minutes (216 laps) but survived one scare after another, including two crashes in the last 15 minutes. He collided with Bill Tunny Jr. in the fourth turn with only three minutes to go but kept going. Just 12 minutes earlier, Dossey tangled with Dan Wright at the “X.”

There were 18 lead changes among five drivers and 28 cautions for 67 laps. Dossey’s 399 laps completed were the third highest total in the past ten years.

For the first time in event history, a driver won the Sonny Thompson Memorial Award and the Sonny Eaton Memorial Award as Jerry Ward won both.

Bear Jr. started from the pole position after qualifying at 16.795 seconds.

Lap Leaders
Jack Dossey Jr. 6 times for 260 laps
Fred Bear Jr. 8 times for 100 laps
Eddie VanMeter 2 times for 23 laps
Bill Tunny Jr. 1 time for 11 laps
Richard Fenwick 1 time for 5 laps
