JONATHAN BYRD CONTINUES SPEEDROME WORLD FIGURE 8® TRADITION
GREATEST FIGURE 8 RACE ON THE PLANET(TM)
Indianapolis Speedrome®
Indianapolis, Indiana
August 12, 2009

The 33rd Annual World Figure 8® Championship is September 10th to 12th, 2009 at the Indianapolis Speedrome®. We are proud to have Jonathan Byrd’s Cafeteria once again sponsor the Friday night action. Known as Jonathan Byrd’s Sizzling Six, the night has 24 locked-in spots on the line for the grand race in six separate qualifying races for the throng of crossover greats. “We began this traditional night back in 1992”, said longtime supporter Jonathan Byrd II. “And many people have said this is the best night of racing of the year.” The program also contains racing in three other Speedrome divisions.

The free meal tradition in the pit area also continues. Every single person who purchases a pit pass on Friday September 11th and Saturday September 12th will receive a free dinner at the track courtesy of Jonathan Byrd’s Cafeteria and the Indianapolis Speedrome®. This $10 per day value gives teams and driver a hearty meal in a short time helping them concentrate on the big race. Pit admission on those two days will be $35 each. The Byrd family has in some form or another been involved at the Speedrome for around 30 years. The patriarch Byrd began Speedrome car ownership in 1982 and has sponsored cars every since. They captured several Midget championships over the years before several successful runs in the Indianapolis 500 and other open wheel events.

Jonathan Byrd's is the largest cafeteria, banquet and catering facility in the world (located just off I-65 in Greenwood, Indiana). They are the official catering company of the World Champion Indianapolis Colts. Jonathan Byrd's has served over ten million guests since it opened in 1988. Byrd’s is a family based business with over 150 employees. They have a great understanding of what it takes to have the highest quality customer service and the best food money can buy. So whether you're traveling on a bus tour, planning to take your family out to dinner, need a place for a wedding reception, hosting a corporate event, looking for a meeting facility or need our catering services contact them at (317) 881-8888.

In 1977 they said this race couldn’t be run, a three hour-long Figure 8 contest. No car will last and no driver will last is what everyone said. Now in its thirty-third year, the World Figure 8® Championship is a racing classic. It is the only race on the planet that a driver can win without being on the track at the start or even seeing the checkered flag. Drivers are placed in the results by total laps completed.

The 32-car starting grid is assembled with the 24 drivers who locked-in through qualifying races on Friday September 11th. The remaining 8 spots are tacked-on through unlimited time trials on Saturday afternoon. Every other car will be lined-up as alternates by their qualifying time. This line of alternates will be added individually to the race as cars drop out of the event. In 1994, Leonard Basham entered as an alternate and drove his way to a third place finish. Those cars that leave the surface can also return making this the only race that can grow in size as the laps increase. Ticket information is available by calling the Speedrome hotline at (317) 353-8206 or by logging on to www.speedrome.com. Don’t let this event pass you by!

The Indianapolis Speedrome® is located at 802 South Kitley Avenue Indianapolis, Indiana 46219 on Indianapolis' Southeast side. We are the home of the $20,000 to win 33rd Annual World Figure 8® Championship September 10-12, 2009. Join us at the GREATEST FIGURE 8 RACE ON THE PLANET(TM)!
